One benefit to having a small tractor on a PTO spreader is less gearbox trouble if a heavy chunk goes over the beaters. I spread a lot of manure with a Kelly Ryan 5'X12' spreader behind a SC Case. In most conditions the little Case did fine. Front end bobbled a little but never came up. In mud or deep snow the Case wimped out but I just planned accordingly. I was careful not to pile too much on the beater for easier starting and less of a starting pile on the ground. When I had it behind the JD A I had to have the drawbar short or it'd bend the drawbar.
