: : : : : : : : : Not vintage, but you guys seem pretty sharp to me so see if anyone can help with this one! I've got a chance to buy a 18HP B&S commercial, 1993 yr, Craftsman 44 in. HD Garden Tractor, garage kept, excellent cond. Widow wants to sell, doesn't know what to price for and I don't know and don't want to get either of us hurt. Anyone have a ballpark figure? Thanks from KY, USA. : : : : : Danny : : : : : I have had a Craftsman and that will also be the last. Have found that they, and this piece of information comes from a man that was in the business of professional repair for 50+ years, Sears manufactures a lot of there stuff in incremental sizes, ie. non-standard and the majority of spares have to be ordered directly from them, hence espensive to repair. My old friend Earl would ask not to work on them unless a customer really pressed him. : : : I have a cousin who has a J.D.400.Good machine, but when you need parts,J.D. is only place you'll find them and they are$$$$$$$$$$ : : : They may be expensive and they are, have rebuilt a 110 and a 114, both old tractors. : : But I was able to rebuild them. Still able to get parts and able to make money on both of them. : : Rebuild a 25 year old craftsman, including the engine and try to make money. I will admit I do not do this for a living, just for fun, but I like a hobby that will pay for itself. The wife is happier that way. : : FARMBOY : Yeah, but Farmboy, you just said it. 25 years old!!!! The old tractors said Sears. The newer ones are better. You just got to remember, they are made for "Yard Only" However I've bushhogged with mine about as well as you can with a yard machine. Abused it as far as most would be concerned. Thats why Iam currantly looking for old tractor to work with. Something I can afford, but will still do what I want! Most Sunday home-owners have a yard that these machines will take care of,and don't want to pay J.D. prices!J.D. a premium machine, but when they break down, John Doe bitches about price of parts!!!!! Mike..... : You are right Mike,I did complain alot when I rebuilt that first JD. And, it is probably just my bad experiences with the Sears that had soured me on them to. My current machine is not even a JD though it is a MF1655. I am located in Northern Utah Mike, you say you are looking for a tractor let me know what you want and price range. I will put out the word here. Lots of little tractors around these parts might be able to help you. Sorry , better ask where you are from. These computers, I forget just how far away you may be.
