My family was German, my grand parents fled Germany as youngsters.
Was interesting when my moms brothers went off to war, some mixed feelings for sure.
The town I live in is very German, until recently you would hear as much German spoken by the old generation as English. Dad had to pause on his stories, as he remembered about 1/2 of his youth in German, has to translate things in his head...
During the war my town had a prisoner of war camp, some Germans held here. Their prison camp has been turned into a state park. The prisoners were rented out for farm labor. In general they were treated pretty good, several came back decades later to visit, the prisoners had a bit of friendship with some of the area farmers.

My wife's dad told a few stories. He was on a munitions ship in Europe, the cleaned 7 torpedoes out of the steel curtain under the ship one time. Then he got sent to the Pasific, and had his life vest sliced off by pieces of a jap plane coming down around him.
I didnt like to pry, but sure enjoyed hearing what I could from him.
