I say the same thing all the time. Personally it more or less embarrasses me when someone thanks me for my service. Granted I spent 6 years in the Navy and am a veteran of the Gulf War, but so what. The way I see it, yes, I did my part and faced certain dangers inherent to my job in the engine room, but there were far more guys out there on the front lines getting shot at and blown up. All the while I was sleeping in my bunk, in a climate controlled space, eating hot food from the mess decks three times or more a day, and basically doing 'shift work' standing watch.
Granted there was the occasional floating mine found and handled by the UDT/Seal teams, but, from what we were told, the worst thing we had to worry about was hitting an uncharted well head.
In the end, I do understand I 'did my part', and not all 'parts' are created equal, but given my perspective on the whole deal I've always looked at it through the eye of the saying that "All gave some, but some gave all".....and the accolades for those that gave some should never even come close to the accolades for those that gave it all..........But that's just me........
