I'm surprised your electric rate is so high. You've got the same price as central NY. I've been told for years that Canadian hydro is "cheap."
I'm heating three houses right now in northern Michigan. Here are some prices from last month. Propane and NG are supposed to have gone way up since I last paid. NG was by far the cheapest and electric the highest (even with 100% efficiency).
Last month here in N.MI: Propane $2.79 per gallon Natural gas - 46 cents per Therm Heating oil - $3.49 per gallon Firewood (hardwood) - $175 per full cord Electric - .172 per KWh
I order of what cheapest? Calculated with electric @ 100% eff., NG and Propane @ 81% or 91%, oil at 80%, and firewood at 50% and 70%.
Price for 1,000,000 BTUs of heat 12/2013:
NG @ .46 per therm = $4.60. 91% = $5.11, 81% = $5.75

There are many types of cylinders that one might run across on a farm scenario. Each one could take a chapter in
