Actually some states have laws on the books that make it the residents responsibility to report at tax time their on line purchases and pay sales tax at that time. Now we all know that every good citizen is doing just that :roll: !
The feds are reluctant to pass that because there are so many different tax rates from city to city and state to state. The book keeping alone would be a nightmare for some businesses. But a lot of brick and stone businesses are pushing their politicians to pass it because they believe that it will bring customers back into their store. Who knows what they will do with it this time. This isn't the first time that this has been looked at by the US congress.

There is no known history regarding its origins or what service it had done, but the following work was undertaken alone to bring it up to show standard.
