: The ol' M was giving me a real slow stop when I was going for the brakes and so I tore one apart to clean it and have a look around. Now, I have always read, been told, and just down right assumed that all Farmall M's have band brakes. Once I got it apart, I realized that there was no recognizable brake band in there. Instead, there is a disc that apparently presses against the housing. Am I wrong ?Is this stock? What happened to that easy-to-service brake band I was so looking forward to meeting? Thanks for any help... Eric, the disk brakes came with the very last M models and the Super M - 400-450's. They were also put on as a replacement on quite a few tractors. My experience with the band brakes on an M is that they are VERY reliable, but do NOT brake as well as the disk brakes I've used on a 300 and a Super M. But this is only WHEN the disk brake is in good condition. The disk brakes must be clean, lubricated properly (don't put gobs of grease in there!) and kept DRY. If your tractor has split or missing rubber seals on the rods going into the case, you are headed for continued trouble. It's also not a good idea to let these things sit out in the rain! The key to maintaing them is to get ALL rust and dirt out, replace the needed parts (including those rubber seals) and use them enough to keep them working well. If they are put in good shape and KEPT DRY, you'll have good brakes that will lock the wheels at any speed.
