That's not entirely true. The 700R4 started production in 1982. Some changes were made in 1984, but they continued to be produced through the 90's and even past 2000. Around 1987 or so, GM changed the designations of all their transmissions to better reflect their actual description. The 700R4 became the 4L60, the TH400 became the 3L80. 4L60 = 4spd, longitudinal drive with a relative torque rating of 60 3L80 = 3spd, longitudinal, 80 torque rating. Later transmissions gained the "E" suffix as the valve bodies became electronic instead of hydraulically controlled. The 4L80E transission is essentially a TH400 with an overdrive section added. Many parts are common to both. In '92 the 4L60 became the 4L60E as electronics took over. They have undergone continual minor changes over the years, but continue to be produced, at least through '09 or later. Many parts are the same as the original design, lots more aren't, but look quite smilar. All GM transmissions are classified the same way now, i.e. speeds, longitudinal or transverse, torque capacity, and then electronic or ??? Everything's electronlc now, so all of them have the E designation on the end. The newer 6 speed trannys are the 6L80E and 6L90E for the pickups. We're just starting to see demand for those parts getting stronger. Ford also uses similar designations. They have the 4R100 (E4OD) 5R110W, and the 6R140.
