Fix the fence, put in the calves since you have a shed for shelter, run a hose to a water tank and get lawn mowed and fertilized at same time by the calves feeding. No fuel used to make hay, quiet, and can advertise "organic" beef at sale. 1 acre for 4 calves OK to start- but that is high stock keeping count for 1 acre most places when finishing. For home table meat- might try sheep instead, 3-4 lambs instead of cattle mean less fencing needed. Depending on breed you can get 40 to 80 pounds of meat from locker from them- Fawteen has Shetlands, a light breed. A Dorper is getting popular with many meat raisers since it is a "Hair/self shedding" breed. Old English breeds still around, the Columbia"s still bred out west. A big advantage of sheep over cattle- you can wrestle sheep to ground with minimal risk to your health while a half grown steer that doesn"t want to go can give a wrestler a big problem since the steer will be at 500 pounds then and likely outweighs average Taler 2 to 1. Cattle still better than horses for lawn control. Mild Teasing Alert! RN
