I'll be 27 in 2 months... 2 years ago, I rented 3 acres and "farmed". Last year, I bought 49 acres with about 25 tillable, and farmed it and the 3 rented. That's all I farm for now. It takes having a good off farm job to support starting to farm, or a family with a farm to help you along. A good wife with a good job would help a lot, too, but I wouldn't know anything about that. That's harder to find than an opportunity in farming! I doubt I'll ever farm full time, and I'm OK with that. I enjoy what I have going on, and am thankful for it.
I already owned a couple of tractors and some equipment. I also have some close friends involved in farming, they've got my back if I need a hand. I don't own my own combine or semi, and have no intent to anytime soon. Way too expensive for me to own a combine that is worth owning. My tractors are old, like my main tractor is an 806, my planter is a fixer-upper IH 800. I'm able to make do with fixer-uppers and whip them into reliable, useable condition.
Don't know where you're at, but I'm in one of the most competitive neighborhoods in S.E. Michigan. I think some neighborhoods are harder than others, but near as I can figure, it's always bee hard to start farming. Just ask your (or a friend's) Grandpa.
But yeah, It's possible. Just keep working. -Andy

But, on the other hand, there is a secret language that our mechanical companions readily do speak. It is an interesting form of communication that involves all the senses of the listener. In this series we are going to investigate and learn the basic rudimentary skills of understanding this lingo.
