I'm not familiar with The JD but disc mowers and disc mocos are all that are used around here. I've got a NH HM236 that is the economy model. A disc mower will cut about as fast as you want to drive in most hay. The only problem I have is in rocks, they will eat blades. Keep the blades sharp, make sure there is the right amount of oil in the cutter bar and they will last a long time. If I was going to buy a new one I would look hard at a vermeer. I've got a neighbor that has a Vermeer pull type disc mower that is really nice. He puts up over 2000 bales a year and has had no problems in the 4 years he has had it.
If you are considering a used one check for any play at each one of the discs. If there is much play at all pass on buying it. Repair of the cutter bar can get expensive fast.
