Quite a few guys around here had 78,79 fords with 351m's and 400. After a few of them blew up including my 400 we found out that if you use the wrong oil filter it would allow all the oil to drain back into the pan when you turned the truck off. The correct oil filter has a check valve in it so there is oil left up top at start up. I can't remember what brand the correct one is, that was almost 30 years ago. It did cure the blowing up issue.
