In my land and the land around here a 16" lays the furrow over completely and makes it much easier to disc. A 14" furrow stands up on it's edge and needs one or two more passes. My land is called faradeau silty clay loam, a light clay with some loam and silt in it, but it is still clay. Here, in the fall, we can plow it when it's wet as long as we can get on it and it will be OK, but in the spring it needs to be worked up right away or it dries into bricks and will never be nice that year. I think most of it depends on your local ground. I would suggest asking your neighbours what works best locally. It was my neighbours who told me a 16 would work better that my old 14. I bought a used Kvernland 3 16's for $1350 and it paid for itself in the first 50 acres over my old International 3 14" because I gained 6" per pass, was able to drive the same speed as the old plow, and it required one or two less passes in the spring. If you have lighter soil it will make less difference.
