If you can get a better guaranteed return on your money from an investment then it's probably just as well to do that rather than pay off the mortgage... especially if that investment is fairly liquid and you have a floating rate mortgage that could be paid out at any time. If you get into pre payment penalties, all the more reason to not pay it out. On the other hand.... if you're just going to store money in a bank account or term deposit where it makes less that your mortgage interest and there's no pre payment penalty for early payment... best money you're going to make is by paying the damn thing off. At the end of the day tho.... do what makes you most comfortable. It's your money.
