If they had not outlawed Myrex you wouldn't have the big problems with those critters. Half a teaspoon of Myrex will take care of the mound in a day.
I know it is considered a enviromental problem but, there was no need to spread it by airplane as they used to do.
When I lived down by Gulfport a neighbor was moving and gave me a 100 pound bag of the stuff. We never had a problem with "fire ants". Had a friend in Texas who had a problem with them and I gave him a pint jar full, he couldn't believe how fast he cleaned up his yard.
