Can the LCD be removed from the controller board? Or is it soldered in place? Your best bet is to replace just the LCD, but you'll need to find a compatible replacement. They're not all the same. Most have a 4/8 bit parallel interface, but there are serial versions as well. The parallel LCDs are typically based on the Hitachi HD44780; you can find more info at the link below.
Although the backlight on these units is externally adjustable, the contrast is not. You're not clear whether the problem is contrast or backlight brightness. If it's contrast, you'll need to replace it. The backlight is often controlled by a pair of resistors, you can change of them to turn up the backlight.
If the LCD is soldered in place, don't try to replace it unless you have the proper equipment and you have experience repairing multi-layer printed circuit boards. You're better off sending it back to the manufacturer.
By the way, carpets and microelectronics are a bad combination. Static electricity is the enemy, and you should keep the board and yourself grounded as much as possible.
