I have seen only one engine failure due to suspected engine oil and it was only suspect. Neighbor had a Massey 300 combine that had a stuck engine when he went to start it up in August to get it ready for the fall harvest. The local Massey dealer hauled it to their shop, took the engine apart and then called the neighbor to come have a look. The neighbor called me to come along so I thought what the heck and went with him. What the mechanic showed us was pistons with sidewalls that were caked with a kind of black carbon. There was no aluminum piston sidewall visible, only this thick carbon. The neighbor asked the mechanic what caused it and the mechanic said it was probably the oil. Neighbor said he changed it every year with "good" (name of local farm store) brand oil. I could instantly see on the mechanic's face the farm store oil was the probable cause but he protected himself and didn't say anything. I don't know if it was detergent or non-detergent. This was a good 20 years ago or more. Ever since then I have been very leery of cheap farm store oil. The cost of an engine overhaul will buy a lot of oil.
Another story: I was in the shop overhauling an engine when an oil salesman walked in. We exchanged greetings and then he looked at the internals of the engine on the stand and said "I wouldn't know the first thing about an engine"!!!!Then he went into his sales pitch and told me so-and-so BTO that lived a few miles away uses his oil and said it's the best oil he's ever used. My first thought was 'The BTO trades tractors every two years so how would he know how good this oil is'! The oil the salesman was selling was very reputable but I forget the brand.
