IHC built minor variations of "family" engines with the same basic internals. The U engine was often built as a replacement for the other engines-the M had oil pan cocks for oil level check while Us had a dipstick with block access hole- and most replaced engines from dealers started with the basic U in a crate from factory with the minor external bits changed as needed. Check the "new" engine Ms and a lot of them will have a dipstick for oil check and a number block part number indicating a U block. Made warehousing of replacement engine simpler- big chunk piece of block with a couple varying small parts kits for many different applications. The one main difference on some was the crankshaft flywheel end on the power units that had belt pulley sheaves instead of flywheel for clutch- different mounting bolt pattern at start. Later U cranks had a different sheave kit that used the flywheel bolt pattern so a combine replacement engine need could be met with same crankshaft instead of changing the crank. Couple other U sizes had a extra set of motormount holes in front of block so could fit different applications- tractor used one set, forklift used the other, combine may have used the forklift hole with one of the tractor holes as part of hydraulic pump mount bracket.
