The football field unit of measure the OP mentioned is because many if not most people can relate to that. Football is the most popular sport in this country. The only time I've ever heard of a football field being used as a unit of measure is on TV when they need something that people can relate to, to compare size or distance.
If you ask someone here in the midwest how far away someplace is you'll likely get the answer in time not miles. If I drive south I can travel close to 2 1/2 times the distance in an hour than if I were to drive north. To annoy those that don't like the time method even more, the travel time is often adjusted for the time of day for "rush hour".
Forget taxes, politics and religion. Lets talk about synthetic VS conventional oil, oil and fuel additives, calcium chloride in tires, Seafoam,......or the biggie.....ethanol ;)
