I never said wearing a seat belt was a bad idea! I do think that minors should be made to wear them. Adults? That should be a personal choice. They USUALLY help save lives and USUALLY reduce injuries. I just don't believe it's the government's place to tell me I have to wear one!
As for the added insurance costs... Do you really believe that if everyone wore a seat belt that insurance rates would go down? I suspect more people use seat belts now than ever before yet insurance rates continue to go up. Remember when the government mandated 5 MPH bumpers? The insurance companies pushed for that law because of what it cost to repair cars that were in parking lot fender benders. Once they got the 5 mph bumpers insurance rates went up to cover the added cost of replacing those 5 mph bumpers when a car was involved in an accident at over 5 mph. The insurance companies will find a way to justify their rates no matter what.
If insurance rates are in fact higher because some don't wear seat belts it's just a small part of the cost of freedom.
My Dad had a part time employee that happened to be a full time cop. He was on a call and got t-boned. Upon impact his seat belt rode up off his hip and caused severe internal injuries that hospitalized him for 3 months. The police department did an in depth investigation because it was an officer involved accident and reported that in that particular case the seat belt caused more serious injuries than it likely prevented.
A driver of a semi that was making a left turn off an exit ramp onto a highway didn't see my nephew approaching from his left. He pulled out right in front of him. My nephew dove to the passenger side floor just before he went under the semi trailer. When the cop arrived and saw the car with the top sheared off he was sure the driver had been decapitated. He was relieved when my nephew walked up and said he was the driver of the car. The cop said not wearing a seat belt that day had certainly saved my nephew's life.
We've got too much government intervention in our lives already. If they want more people to wear belts they should educate them, not force them.
BTW, there are exceptions to mandatory seat belt laws. In some states people that make frequent stops are exempt. Delivery truck drivers, people that are making frequent stops while "prospecting" (making frequent sales stops).
