We took a train ride from Williams, AZ to the canyon. Over a 2 hour ride, went very slow. However the package deal came with staying at a lodge overnight, a tour bus ride, and train ride back. At Williams we stayed there the night before train ride and the night after. I would NEVER pay for a tour bus again. The Park Service includes free shuttle bus rides. The red line goes from the village, 8 miles along the south west rim. You can hike the full 8 miles. Or just part of it and hop on a shuttle bus, every 15 minutes, at many points along the rim. If you hike the full 8 miles, hop on a shuttle, about 45 minutes back to villiage. There is also a shuttle that runs through the village. Takes you to camp grounds, parking, many points for pick up and drop off about a 45 minute ride.
I found the shuttle bus really neat, natural gas powered, clean, comfortable. Nice experience. Wish we had scheduled more time at canyon. But at the time, my feet were killing me.
I think there may be a shuttle service for the east rim trails. We didn't go on them. We took a short trail to go in to the canyon a very short distance. The trip was a real visual overload.
I would highly recommend the Canyon. Take camera with loads of memeory. Before you go, see if your feet can handle hiking a long distance. I wish I had, then I would have discovered I had the wrong shoes and socks. George
