What was puzzling about my whole dilema was how simple the system is.Positive cable to ground,negative to starter switch,negative from othe side of switch to starter motor,wire from generator cut out to ammeter to negative cable on sitch.No regulator or starter solenoid.
I had new cables made up(still had originals that the braiding was coming apart) and put those on,hit the starter switch and it popped off in half a revolution!Even though the cables tested ok with the ohm meter,I guess you can't overlook the obvious.
Thanks for all the input!! I visit this site at least twice a day from work and there really is a grand group of guys here.
