Are you looking for a 'cover crop' to plant with your grass seed to protect the ground until the little weak grass sprouts come up,and establish?
Here on the farm we would plant oats. About a bushel an acre, or a tad more.
The oats grows like a fast growing grass, it can be mowed and will regrow for a while, it has very wide leaves compared to a lawn, it will winter kill and not bother you next year. Typically it gets ripe by August if you would let it go to seed.
I don't know if that is correct or not, but since I have a bin full of the stuff here it is how I would do it.
There are some annual rye grass (not cereal grain rye!) that could work and looks more like a fine grass, will die off in a year. Many grass seed mixes include a large amount of this, makes the lawn look good the first year, but this all dies the first winter, and the other slow permenant lawn seed takes over. This is likely what you are looking for, if you are looking for a cover crop to help out the new seedlings?
