On most of those skit steers the batter will come out with the arms down....it's not easy, but it can usually be done. That said, a new battery and jumper cables aren't going to do you a bit of good unless the cables are at least as big as the battery cables currently going to the battery. In the end though bigger is better and if you can find a set made of at least 1-0, that ought to do just fine. That said insure that you completely disconnect the old battery as leaving it in the system will, basically, draw the new battery down to it's level. In other words a new battery hooked up 'remotely' with cables heavy enough to actually start the engine and you should be good.
As for ether, it has glow plugs DO NOT use ether. Using ether with operational glow plugs can create an explosion in the cylinder with enough force that it can damage the engine. Ether and glow plugs, intake heaters, or anything else like that simply DO NOT mix. Enough said on that.
Beyond that, I do this kind of thing for a living, and can say the rest of the advice given thus far is sound, and is pretty much what I would do if you were to ask me to come get it going for you. Good luck.

The year was about 1967 and my father found a good used Ford 601 tractor to use on the farm instead of "Bob", our old mule. Now my grandfather had had this mule since the mid 40's and he was getting some age on him. S
