Well, Nick, I looked at the exploded view. Kinda hard to really figure it out. but since it calls it a piston retainer snap ring, I would say that it keeps the piston from coming all the way out of the bore when it reaches end of travel. I have never seen one made like that, but that is why you have to work the snap ring in place after the piston is inserted into the bore. Tricky, I know, but it just takes perseverance. I don't know how many times I have had to lay something down and just walk away for a while, drink a cup of coffee,or something and then go back to it. If you get frustrated and keep on trying, chances are you will just get more frustrated, or even pissed off and that's when I tend to throw things so I just have to cool off for a few minutes. But,seriously, if you follow the step as outlined to install the ring, the main part is rotating the piston while doing so, it should work. You may want to post your question on the Case forum. Some of those people may know an easier way. Good luck.
