John,

Your M should currently have a generator. I don't know of a 6 volt alternator. If your six volt generator is in good shape, all you have to do is adjust the regulator to set up the charging rate a little and it should keep your 8 volt battery charged plus your tractor should start faster with the 8 volt battery.
