I'm negative on silicone too. Have fournd too many pieces loose in the wrong places over the years. For the old gasket, I pull off as much as I can(do not spend much time on it). Then I take a 4&1/2 inch angle grinder and put a twisted steel wire cup(3 inch). Just run it slowly around the housing and it will quickly tear off the gasket. No scraping or other aggravations. You will have a nice clean surface. Then, I like to use permatex #2 gasket sealer in a tube(about$3.00) Just tab it around several places on the gasket. Press on the housing a couple times and your all set. Should take about 10 to 15 minutes.
