I don't carry a leatherman for the sake of it hanging off my belt and being heavy because it has a bunch of junk that I never use. I prefer a more compact unit. I carry the smallest set of knipex pliers (knipex calls them "cobra") in my left front pocket. They are light weight, not bothersome and are handier than a pocket on a shirt. No way no how would I trade them for a leatherman or vise grips.
Knipex designs their pliers in such a fashion that it is impossible to mash your fingers with the handles. The metal used in the jaws seems to also be better than vise grip. My pliers have been used and abused but the jaws still look almost new.
