I had the identical problem on my JD 112 a couple times.
one time it was a bearing in the deck that seized so either the clutch had to slip or the engine stall , second time it happened i found a half broke wire not supplying enough juice to the magnet.
on two other occasions it was the clutch plate broke a strap were it is riveted to the hub. and made the plate run out of orbit.
The the third time it gave me grief i fixed the clutch by getting rid of the 3 straps and replacing it with a triangular piece of sheet metal incorporating all 3 fastening points in 1 solid circle.
Been trouble free for the last 10 or so years.
These clutches are pretty pricy so it pays to try to fix them.
