Walking onions are not slicers. They are a multiplying type, mainly used as green onions. They are called "walking onions" because they make small bulblets on a stalk that bends over and when the cluster of bulblets touch the ground they grow a new clump of onions. Those will grow and develop the bulblets and fall over starting another clump in a new place. Don't know how much ground much ground they will cover if left alone. I dig mine and start new crop in the fall. The bulbs formed underground can be peeled and eaten also. Sort of like a shallot.
