I drain oil as soon as I can after using the vehicle for a while. I know the oil is hot, so I am careful not to get burned, but I THINK that I have a better chance of getting anything that might be suspended in the oil if I drain it quickly.
I have dropped drain plugs in the oil many times and have a magnet to retrieve them. I usually will let the open oilpan drip for a while to get the most old oil out. I have a second small pan to get the last drips.
I prefer to empty my main drain pan while the oil is hot, as it will pour easier. I generally use the old oil for one thing or another on the place. It is excellent for discouraging a red ant pile--it either kills the nest or the ants go somewhere else. I also use some for dust control on the gravel road.
