You might go ahead and remove the tailgate and make sure the hinge/pivots are lubed good. There is a torsion bar that runs the length of the tailgate from the LH side to RH side. On the very bottom of the tailgate on the RH side you should see a machine screw, this screw goes into a block to pinch the torsion bar in place. After loosening screw the torsion bar should remove out the LH hinge/pivot hole.
Does it feel like the torsion bar is assisting the tailgate? If not maybe the bar is broken, or the machine screw pinch bolt is loose and the bar is slipping in the block and making the noise. If the bar is broken, you can leave it out and have a normal tailgate. Replacing the torsion bar is easy, I have a trick to get the broken piece out, if needed I will post that after the reply.
