Any idea what species? I had one come klunking into the garage one night 8 years or so back, painted turtle, egg laying season etc., most years I mark and protect a few nests, dig em up in the fall, winter em over and release the following summer, they come up from the big pond every year and sometimes lay eggs in almost the exact same spot, amazing how they can do that, make the trip through the vegetation, back to the pond and the hatchlings make it to the pond too. They always lay in a sunny spot, deeper eggs are one gender, upper eggs the other, depends on temperature. One year I did a nest of snapping turtles, whole crew of 50 eggs, not all were right, some deformities, I figured they might reduce the geese population LOL ! Most eggs are a feast for some critters that smell and dig them up, unless it rains, good soaker, most if not all never make it through the night, mother natures way of balancing the population.
