I have a smaller very well insulated home, and have geothermal heat, both of which I am very happy with. Just remember, that everything has limited life. Solar cells should last for extended periods if designed properly, but the covering over them will deteriorate with time and UV exposure reducing output. The inverters and regulators should last almost indefinitely if designed properly, but even so will fail occasionally. The big long term expense is batteries. Deep cycle batteries with enough capacity to handle higher loads over a long time are very expensive, and even if well maintained, such as ours at the phone company are, still are only dependable from 8 to 20 years, depending on the type.
