It really depends on several thing on what round baler would be "best" for you.
1) Budget you have to work with.
2) The size of tractor you want to pull it with.
3) The dealerships in your area for service. IF your a novice on a round baler you going to need some help now and then. So don't buy a brand that has little support in your area.
Now we have good dealer support for most of the main brands around me.
Here is how I rate them here: 1) JD, The JD balers since the JD 530 came out will bale well, stay away from the JD 510 balers. I have four dealers within a thirty mile radius. Just about anything you would commonly need they have in stock.
2) NH, This would be the newer belt NH balers. A chain NH baler just will not make as tight a bale as a belt baler. ( I rate NH over Vermeer in my area because of dealer support. Three NH dealers and one Vermeer in thirty miles)
3) Vermeer, They have made a good baler since the open throat came out. Their weakness is dealer support. There just are not enough Vermeer dealers for good support in all areas. We have a very POOR dealer around here close. There is disadvantages to farmer dealers. Usually they do not have the staff for real good full service over a very wide area.
4) AGCO/Hesston/MF/New Idea balers, The newer models are fine but many of the older Hesston balers just where poor quality balers. They are cheap but you get what you pay for. New Idea is kind of an orphan with AGCO going to Mainly Hesston hay equipment. The long term concern is support on parts.
5) Gehl: They have some models that are a fairly good baler but the dealer and parts support is not good. Plus the parts availability for Gehl farm equipment is going down hill at full speed. Gehl is rapidly going to skid steers and construction equipment only. There is Gehl equipment that is not five years old that some parts are not available for. That has killed the resale of Gehl hay/forage equipment around here.

I worked as a machinist and engine erector, with time spent overseas. I have always had a love for machinery, and an appreciation for farming and farm machinery. I was born and raised in Brooklyn, New York. Not a place one would associate with farms or farm machinery. I credit my parents for instilling a lot of good values, a respect for learning, a knowledge of various skills and a little knowledge of farming in me, amo
