In my experience, not that much difference. The used oil from a diesel engine will probably be very black and maybe a little messier than used oil from a gas engine, as a diesel produces small bits of carbon in the combustion process that end up in the oil. The black used oil will stain concrete or anything it hits worse than the less dark oil. I like to put newspaper down to catch any spills.
I always change the oil filter when I change the oil in anything. And like anything else, I prefer that the engine be hot when I start to change the oil. I usually let the used oil drip for a while to get the most out of the engine. Good luck!
