1. ANY person who has paid in the SSI program is to receive what they put in regardless if they are millionaires or not.
2. The disability BS should be watched over more by people who check for scammers like your neighbor--including investigators for SSI. .
I agree on both counts.
1) I've paid into SS for 40+ years and will work past my full payout age (God willing) to increase the monthly check. My wife and I have saved dutifully and hopefully will be able to supplant SS with income from our IRA's and 401k's. I make no apologies about taking full SS.
2) I worked with a guy for many years who was obsessed with saving money. Wouldn't have kids because they would "cost him money". He was laid off as an engineer about 10 yrs ago and never bothered to look for a job. He has $2-3 mil in the bank. A couple of years ago, he got Lyme disease, was very sick for about a year, had to use a walker during his recovery. Well, he somehow got full SS disability. Now, he's fully recovered, plays golf all the time, spends his days in the casinos. Still collecting disability. What gets me is he was NOT working by choice for many years when he got sick and all of a sudden he's "disabled" and unable to work after his recovery? That's a fraud and someone scamming the system if I ever saw one. The whole SS disability system needs to be overhauled. There are Law firms that advertise that they will get you full disability even when you've been denied.
