Any good repair shop should be able to be up front and honest with a potential customer and say, we will call you in 2 days with an estimate and if it costs more to fix it than what it is worth they should say so.
I had a guy at a hardware store 2 years ago that tried to fix an old crapsman leaf blower that I had, 20 years old too. He could not fix it for under $40 so....I bought a new husxy blower that his employer sold. $ 180 I think. This guy put less than an hour into my old crapsman.
