As I'm out and about as a telephone guy, and that gets me around, I'm seeing more and more vacant homes with sheriff's repo stuff up in the windows or on the doors. Poor neighborhoods, middle income neighborhoods, wealthy neighborhoods, out in the rural, rural country by me. To me, that's very scary stuff. I agree that there are jobs out there, but the quality of the jobs, the pay, the benefits are not what they once were, and in all seriousness, I don't see where they will ever be.
Politics aside, think about this. There is a former U.S. House Speaker, whose name I will not mention, that said a couple of years ago that people could and should be freed from their, our jobs. Free to become the artist that they always wanted to be, thanks to the afordable care act that would give them health care forever, wherever they went, whatever they did or did not do. Again, politics aside, does that sound familiar? I could look it up and link to it, she said it. Now, for the past several years, every quarter a new 100,000 - 175,000 jobs are said to have been created, and every quarter as the next round of new jobs created are posted, there is always a small, very small blurb, barely mentioned, but mentioned for the record...revising the last quarter's numbers downward. Seems to happen every quarter. When those jobs numbers come out, the Wall Street Journal has a tendency to break those numbers down to jobs that tend to fall into three categories...restaurant, bar, and I forget the third, but its not far from the other two. All of those jobs are part time, and at least two of them pay less than minimum wage, because restaurant and bar have a lower pay scale in that they are assumed to make more in tips. People don't tend to start families or purchase homes on or below part time minimum wage jobs, but the good old manufacturing jobs are going, going, go... Add to that, that some companies are refusing to hire that 50th employee so they won't have to take part in the affordable care act, and some are cutting hours down to 30 hours, no fulltime employees so that they won't have to partake either. So now, you have people going to part time from full time, which then creates more part time jobs that get tallied into quarterly job reports, and there are new jobs being created, part time by turning full time jobs into part time jobs. Presto! And since we want to be more like Europe, or so we are told, where there are more part time jobs than full time jobs, and moree vacation than not, and health care, hey we can all work part time and also be part time artists, or whatever we want to be, as we are "freed from our jobs", or whatever the exact wording was.
I'm still fortunate enough to have a fulltime job to pay my mortgage, bills, put food on the table for my family and a few people here and there that are in need. For how much longer? God only knows. Truth be told, I have no intentions of being "freed from my job", or whatever the exact wording was.
