I have a 144 & I like it quite a bit. It is indeed a very simple machine. I do agree, it does not like heavy hay. I have a grass/alf mix that shot up like blazes this year with all the rain. All adjustments are set wide open on that machine & the chute still had to come off! I guess, in it's defense.... it's at least easy enough to unplug. :vD Especially if you are 6' or better so you can reach over the back. It will also pull up hay out of nowhere in a short or thin crop.
As for speed, the dealer says don't push it past 8mph. So in the heavy hay I kept my speed at about 7. 3 or 4 will do fine if you need to pick through stubble to get a thin windrow up.
