The 1840 has no clutches, it is a hydrostatic drive. Under the seat there are spring centering mechanisms that return the levers to center position. look at the spring mechanism while moving the lever and see if the spring has free play either way, if so adjust the nut on the rod till the spring eliminates any free play. If the unit still moves you may have to change the rod length to the drive pump. Look it over carefully before you do anything so you understand it before changing anything.
Another issue, if the unit has high hours check ALL the ball joints in the lever linkage for wear as it is near impossible to get the centering mechanism to work if there is extreme wear in the joints.
