Len, I've owned, used bought and sold Motorhomes nearly 40 years and loved every minute of it. You say you are buying a used one which I think is financially wise and you have made your choice so I hope people will address your question and not start fights about your personal choice (motels versus RV lifestyle etc etc blah blah blah lol)
Its been my experience Newmar, Marathon and of course Prevost etc. are top line, but I like the less expensive Tiffin family also. If you step down some in price I like the Winnebago family.
Since you are using it for shorter trips I don't think the extra initial cost plus maintenance a Diesel unit would ever pay for itself over a gas powered unit. However, many larger Class A's are going to be Diesel pushers of which I prefer Cummins coupled to an Allison tranny. A smaller not so expensive Class A gas powered unit may have say a Ford V10 but I personally prefer Chevrolet based over that.
There are so many available options I dont even want to open that can of worms, so look at your needs, explore the options SHOP AROUND, test drive and I dont think you could go wrong with the likes of a Newmar ONE GREAT COACH. There are a ton of RV Forums like Good Sam and RV Net, Forest River, IRV2 etc etc and others where you would get more informed opinions versus some here. Ask the same question on those and you will get a ton of good info and plenty of opinions
