Casey: I feel I may have came down on your latest purchase too hard. I truly feel that a higher quality mower is a better long term investment considering money and time/trouble.
I know you have had trouble finding a reasonably price JD mower. Here are some ideas that may help you.
1) Forget buying one from a JD dealer now. Your still in season. Try to limp along until fall or early winter.
2) Look for a dealer that sells many mowers not the average JD AG dealer that handles maybe 10-20 new mowers each year. Really look for a JD commercial products dealer. They handle mowers and compact tractors only. They will be much more helpful than the average AG equipment dealer. Your $1000-1500 mower deal will mean something to them where with the average AG dealer/salesman your just a bother.
3) Try to find a mower that is in good shape but is not all serviced and prettied up for resale. You will have better luck doing this with late season trade-ins. Then offer a cash offer AS-IS on the mower. This will enable you to buy more mower for less money. Making the dealer service, prep and warranty the mower will cost you money that you really don't need to spend. Just make sure you can do a ride and drive. You can buy a lot of cleaning supplies and oil/filters for what you will save.
4) Where in Kentucky are you located??? I know dealers and small independent dealers in some areas of Kentucky. I maybe able to point you to one of them that can help you out. The dealerships I worked at sold a lot of lawn tractors. The JD workers get discounts on "new" mowers so most of them get new ones every year. So we always had a lot of low hour one year old mowers for sale. I wholesaled them all over the US to dealers.
5) If I know where your located at. I maybe able to work with you and help you find a good "deal" I personally have 15-20 mowers most of the time. I have family in Ohio. I MIGHT be able to get something back to you.
6) Try to find local independent lawn mower repair shops. They will have JD mowers at lower prices than the JD dealers will. Also remember many of these fellows are old school. Meaning they may not use computers much. So just looking on the Internet will miss them. Asked around an you should be able to find some of them.

Here is the reality on values.
You should be able to find JD LX 188 with 48" decks for $600-700 in pretty good shape. One with a broken hood for half that. If you do not mind some bolts and washers showing you can "FIX' that hood, Then you can mow for years with the mower. The hood does not cut the grass.
A lower hour JD 325 can be bought for under $2000 with a 48" . The earlier models have a single cylinder 17 HP Kawasaki motor the later ones are 18 HP 2 cylinder Kawasaki motors. The early ones will be under $2000 and the newer ones just over. The JD 325 will be a actual GARDEN tractor. Heavier transmission and frame. Plus hydraulic lift and automotive type steering(enclosed gear box).

As you can tell I vote for getting your money back on the mower you bought. Take that money and buy a better mower. If you have to "HIRE" your yard mowed a few times this fall it will be cheaper than buying the wrong mower just because you have too.
