Bill, the last thing you want to do is install a geo yourself. You definately run the risk of voiding the waranty.
My BIL has a HVAC business, installs geos. He has backhoe, but hires someone with an excavator to dig a deep pit, not trenches.
There is talk amoung people in the HVAC business that 410a is causing pressure related problems.
There is talk that engineers are working on finding a replacement for 410a.

IMHO, there isn't anything better than making a superinsulated house.
