I would suspect a fair number of farmers including BTO's cut corners by planting bin run RoundUp ready soybeans which has been a no-no in terms of the patent protection Monsanto has sought. For the record I do not do that. There is not much you can do otherwise to cut corners without cutting production. There are a few farmers who take advantage of trusting landlords by paying under the going rate on rent. I think the day is coming that some of these guys are in for a shock when they go down to the bank to do the periodic review of outstanding loans. Farmers thought after the implosion of the early 1980's that the banks would stay permanently puckered up in terms of squeezing out loans. Actually, a lot of lenders have been fairly loose with money over the last five years. The day might be coming where the bank does consider 2,000 dollars per acre the max on loans and the farmer will be pressured to pay the difference quickly despite any past promises. A college professor once told a class I was in that all lenders have a call-in provision on all loans to protect the lender against what they consider excessive risk.
