oldtanker, Reading all the post and yours, makes me wonder why things are different where I live.
I have good luck doing business at Menards, 3.5 miles away. Go there because it close. Go there multiple times a week. I have no issues. There are usually 3-5 people working in each department. They are very helpful. They even have girls working in all departments. I ask them where something is and they point to it because they also stock the shelfs. Lucky to find one person at Lowes. Menards have many check out lanes. Lucky to find 2 at lowes.
That said, I have no complaints about either really, except slow at Lowes and 15 miles away. But sometimes things at lowes is cheaper, sometimes menards is cheaper.
I do all my appliance business at Lowes. They have free delivery. So when a tenant needs a new refrig, lowes delivers, removes old one, it's free and I do nothing.
On the other hand, if you know how work the system, Menards will deliver large items for free too. A few years ago I added a 26x26 room on. The boys in the contractor's dept, old friends, put together the package I needed. Another friend, my contractor, has a menards contractor's credit card. I put $1 of my order on contractor card and the rest I paid for. I got free delivery on the entire building package. That was priceless.
My menards is the #4 or #5 largest sales store menards has. The people there I've known when they were kids. Some have worked there since the store opens. There isn't a department in the store that I don't know at least one people there. There is a girl in mill work that knows everything there is to know about doors and windows. Those people treat me very well, very helpful. Only problem, they like to talk to much, too friendly when I'm in a hurry, but it's always a plesant experience to see a smilie face.
It seems like when I go to lowes, I see a new face. That said, I don't go to Menards and Lowes to pick their brains and find out how to do a job. I just want to get the materials and be gone quickly.
If I need a load of lumber to build something, I like being able to drive in Menard's yard and have it loaded on trailer. Lowes you have to wheel it out the door on a cart, real deal breaker for me.
I still shop at both places, I don't go there for information. Each place has some things that are better quality or better bargins. Lowes carries my favorite dewalt tools.
I don't have an issue with menards rebates either. If they want to give me a full rebate on items I buy, I'll pick them up, fill out the rebate and get my money back in 4-6 weeks. I don't see the big deal. Many of the free after rebate items I pick up are Christmas stocking stuffers. Who doesn't like free tools at Christmas? george

Today's Featured Article - Listening to Your Tractor - by Curtis Von Fange. Years ago there was a TV show about a talking car. Unless you are from another planet, physically or otherwise, I don’t think our internal combustion buddies will talk and tell us their problems. But, on the other hand, there is a secret language that our mechanical companions readily do speak. It is an interesting form of communication that involves all the senses of the listener. In this series we are going to investigate and learn the basic rudimentary skills of understanding this lingo.
