I quit growing mine years ago for the same reasons. What you got back in no way equalled what went in time and time again.
So I can go to my local family owned chain grocery store that has been in business for over 50 years and pay $12 a lb. (today's prices) for fresh Choice, grain fed Angus, Rib Steaks (in this area most are misnamed Ribeyes.....the eye is the circle, not the whole rib) from his meat display case when I want to splurge. Otherwise I go to WM and buy some chicken or some pork or 5 lbs. of ground beef.
On hoof prices today, I'm thrilled that the farmer is finally getting some decent prices to help offset the high cost of everything else he needs to make a living. I just bought a skid of fertilizer a couple of days ago and the tab was $812. I just stood there looking at and shaking my head.
