When I was doing insurance inspections, (I quit a month ago), I always carried my camera on a lanyard around my neck while I was doing an inspection so both hands would be free to write on a clipboard.
That being said, I had my camera on the end of an 8' camera pole one day taking a photo of a roof. I stepped backwards one step, stepped on some ice, and went on my butt. The camera hit an ice covered sidewalk from a height of about 14", allowing that I'm 6'2" tall.
I thought the camera would be busted all to hell. I picked it up and all that had happened was the battery door popped open. I always carried a backup camera, so as a precaution I switched memory cards and used my backup the rest of the day, but the one that took the fall still worked as usual.
It was a Sam Sung. There was a particular model that was perfect for my purposes. Simple, easy to use with one hand, and dang near indestructible. When I found that model was no longer made, I bought several good used ones on ebay, and rotated using them. Right now, I have four in my desk drawer.
