Recently my 20 hp command engine had a mag problem. When I turn it off, only one coil shuts off. Well I thought I replaced the mag coil causing the issue, wrong. So I replaced the coil wires, even one coil, and come to find out it's the other coil. That said, I turn my engine off with the solenoid on engine. My engine won't run for 5 seconds with no power to solenoid.
I blew a fuse once and discovered just how fast engine stops.
I have a 14 hp single cylinder kohler on an old crapsman mower. The solenoid went out. I went to town to buy a new one and the parts store said I would have to go to sears to buy it. Well Bubba suggested that I wedge a small paper clip in solenoid to hold jet open. Bubba was right, it been working without a solenoid for about 7 years.
I asked why have a solenoid? Parts guy said it was to prevent dieseling when engine shuts off. I can tell you, the solenoid doesn't prevent dieseling. Adding E85 to gas does. I'm currently making my own E20 blend, so far with great results, no side effects like carb, gas hose or fuel pump issues. However it could happen and there are some who HATE me so saying ethanol does have some good properties.
I recently bought a used 18 hp command off a cub cadet. Got it off craigslist. It has an older carb with adjustments. Was planning to use it on my 20 hp to lean down the fuel mix. So far, I may not, waiting to see what winter brings. I'm guessing I may have to keep what I have and reduce E blend.
Someone on YT gave me this link to kohler, I downloaded a service manual, found it to be very helpful, hope it helps you. Good luck
