: On about three occasions now I have passed up some very good deals on tractors having been hesitant at auctions. Are there techniques the experts use at these things when bidding? No expert, but I always try to make an auction a fun experience for myself. Bid on some minor things of interest to get your voice or hand recognized by the auctioneer. Never go over your limit. I like going ahead of time and pointing out problems to others. Give the seller and auctioneers the idea that you've got your mind of interest on something different than you actually want. Stay away from auctions that have a big crowd! There are always a group wanting to throw away money. I guess it's buying glory or something like it in a large group of observers. I also like having a friend jump in with a first bid and then die out of it quickly. This seems to slow down the auctioneers climb to higher prices and keeps fewer out of the bids.
